EMPIR project

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as deployed in routine clinical use has traditionally made use of qualitative approaches. Such approaches are simple and powerful but lack both clinical specificity and consistency in contrast between images acquired on different scanners at different times. This effect is noticeable between different timepoints on individual scanners at a single institution. This is problematic for larger studies such as clinical trials and training artificial intelligence.

Quantitative MRI (qMRI) resolves this by forming images based on physical parameters, but there is a need to validate and benchmark current approaches, and for test artefacts and appropriate best practice guidance for their use.

The concept of this project is develop traceable, well-characterised test objects for qMRI measurands and use them to develop improved QA and metrology for qMRI methods in current clinical use, demonstrating this in an international multi-site trial. Verlab is leading partner on developing code of practice for improved QA and metrology.
